How is it possible that the 7th wealthiest athletic department in the county with yearly earnings of $175 million dollars can’t produce a competitive basketball team.  Yes, I know the men’s teams is respectable, but still this will be the third year in a row that the Sooners will likely end the season with a losing record in conference play.

OU will have to beat a surging OSU team in Stillwater to finish above water in the conference and secure an NCAA tournament bid.  Making matters worse, OSU, the best team that money can buy, is loading up for next year by bringing to Stillwater the 5th best recruiting class in America.  OU on the other hand is set to bring in a recruiting class that can’t be found on any recruiting list.  Rivals ranks basketball classes as low as 80th in the country and OU is nowhere to be found on that list.  I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that happen before.

Give Lon credit though, he’s doing his part to win games by moving home games out of town.  He’s realized that playing home games in front of empty chair backs at the LNC is not helping his cause.  As a result, Lon has turned two homes into road games.  Who knows maybe next year OU can move the entire home schedule to the Peake.  While I think that Cheasepeake Arena is a cool place, I also think that finding a home court advantage nearer campus would be nice.  Seriously, I remember the home court advantage that the old McCasland Field House gave Sooner teams.   I vote to move games there for next season.

Of course it could be worse, at least the men’s team has a clue.  The women’s program is sucking air.  That program is a train wreck with no future in sight.    Unfortunately for Joe Castiglione, Sherri keeps winning just enough games to allow Joe to keep sitting on his hands.  I’m sorry joe, Sherri’s program ain’t coming back.

Oh well, at least we have gymnastics and of course spring football.  We also have softball gearing up for another great year and what appears to be pretty good baseball team.  As you can tell, I’ve already put basketball in my rear view mirror.

As for softball, Patty Gasso is putting together the #1 recruiting class in the country.  The Sooners are also currently ranked #2 in the country in a year that was predicted by many to be a rebuilding process.  Who knows, if this keeps up Joe may have no choice but to build Patty that new stadium after all.  Possibly Joe could redirect some of the money going down the basketball rabbit hole and make the new stadium happen.

In any case Sooner fans, OU basketball is dead, but fortunately for us there will be life after basketball…

Boomer Sooner…
